Human Concerns & Social Justice

Human Concerns & Social Justice

St. Robert meets the needs of the Parish community, and the larger Shorewood and world communities, through a variety of ministries. Contributions of time, talent and treasure are always appreciated, and there are activities for virtually any mix of interests, skills and abilities. A sampling of Human Concerns and Social Justice ministries includes:

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Would you like to help with Communion at Sunday Mass? Or bring Communion to the homebound? Then contact Elizabeth at EMHC@strobert.org to get more information and sign up. She can answer your questions, and arrange for the necessary training to become an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.

Would you like to have someone from the Parish visit a loved one in their home or facility on a regular basis? Then you can also contact Elizabeth (EMHC@strobert.org) and she will make the arrangements.

Would you like to arrange for Communion for a homebound person? Please contact Deacon Jon Gabik to make arrangements.

Food Pantries/Meals

St. Martin de Porres Share-A-Meal
Share-A-Meal collection baskets in the church support the St. Martin de Porres food pantry. If you would like to know what items are most needed, there are shopping lists here and here. You can find out more about the St. Martin de Porres food pantry here or on their website.

Kinship Community Food Center
Formerly Riverwest Food Pantry, the Center’s mission is “We come together around food to relieve hunger, improve lives and grow community well-being.” The Pantry needs 14-18 people to help clients with registration, grocery selection, carrying bags, serving snacks, and clean up. For details, click here.

Ladies of Charity

The mission of the Ladies of Charity in Milwaukee is to clothe school-aged children. School social workers determine the clothing needs of a family and send them to our store (1936 N. Vel R. Phillips Ave., Milwaukee) with a voucher. We make sure that children have new underwear and socks and nearly-new clothing for the school year. For more details click here.

St. Vincent de Paul Society

The St. Vincent de Paul Society provides a meal program, cold weather warming room, furniture, and other resources to the homeless and those in economic need. To learn how you might help, click here

St. Jude School, Uganda

St. Robert has partnered with St. Jude School, in rural Uganda, to build a new school building and furnish it with books and desks. We are currently supporting the construction of a residence for teachers at the School, who have had to commute considerable distances over rough roads. Past accomplishments and current status of the project are described here and here

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Do you knit or crochet? Would you like to help someone in need of prayer? Makers of these special, hand-knit shawls pray before the shawl is made, pray while working on the shawl, and pray after it is finished. When completed, the shawl is given to someone in need of prayer.

Respect for Life Committee

Our primary goal is to increase awareness of the dignity and sanctity of life and to promote respect for human life at every stage from conception to natural death. Members of the Committee take part in such activities as the annual Life Chain, hosting guest speakers, sponsoring a collection of baby items for at-risk mothers in October, and ministry of prayer (the Spiritual Adoption program). New members are always welcome. Please call the Parish Office, (414) 332-1164, to participate. Information on our programs and activities can be found here.
